FOR SALE Greenville, Texas - Tamper TMC-2 - Project car not NARCOA ready. Fiberglass body is in poor condition and will need quite a bit of structural rework.  Steel undercarrage frame members seem straight.  Axles seem straight and the hubs seem good.  Front and rear bumbers bent but are simple "c" channel material.  All four wheels are scrap and only good for moving car.  All brake rigging is in place but will need to be straightened, reworked or otherwise duplicated.  There is no engine and there is no transmission with this car.  Rare car $500.00 OBRO.

I have truck and trailer capacity to help move the car within a distance of about 200 miles from the Greenville, TX area.  A fuel charge for helping relocate the car will apply.  Amount to be negoiated between seller and buyer if my equipment is used to move the car.  Otherwise, arrange for your own transporation for the vehicle.

Car History:
I first became acquainted with this car in the 1980's when I saw it stuffed out in the weeds at the local rail yard in Commerce, Texas. There it sat for years. I finally attempted to acquire the car in the late 80's without success. A short line operator acquired the line where the car sat, and took the fiberglass body off the frame. The body sat in the weeds for a number of additional years until I was finally able to acquire the body a few years ago.

Recently I observed the frame to this car on the junk pile of the short line railroad, and was able to acquire the frame. I have found it to be an extremely heavy car compared to the Fairmont cars I am working, even without an engine and transmission.

Additional information I have is below these photos.  These are photos of the car that is for sale.

According to e-mail communications from "Rob" <p27730a@hotmail.com>

There are two currently running in the US and 2 in the process of being rebuilt. Mine is the only one restored and running. This may be the 10th TMC-2 in the US.
When I restored mine, the costs were:  transmission was $1,800, torque converter around $700, I put in a Honda GX-620 20 hp that runs around $1,100.
Based on the photographs, the car you have advertied is a 1983 model year

You really should think about restoring the Tamper. The unique Tampers built in 83 have the body sitting on springs so vibration from the chassis is negligible (the 1980 ones were mounted solid to the chassis). The smoothest riding motorcar made. The huge one piece windshield is close to the operator giving great visibility. The operator sits up quite high for a great view although on big rail it is kind of a reach for the gals to get in. The snowmobile drive is still available and makes it easy to operate, no clutch and a continuously variable gear ratio like a Woodings. I can almost guarantee you will have the only Tamper on most every run. They were being sold just as the speeder market collapsed in 83. Maybe a little scrounging in the junk pile will turn up the fwd/rev Granite State transmission.

From e-mail communications with: "guy howard" ghoward@efn.org

Its a Tamper TMC-2. There are two operating units in Oregon I have 6760RD and Rob in Porland has the other. Your car came from the SP rental department maybe in the San Fransisco area. There are several TMC2's undergoing restoration around the country.

The images below are NOT of the car for sale above.  These are images sent to me via e-mail and the author did not identify their original source.  They are presented here to give a potential buyer of the car above the level of work involved in restoring one of these cars to operation.
